Where expert SEO guidance actually matters
No idea if ChatGPT ads are even worth exploring
With so little established best practice yet, it’s hard to know whether to invest time and budget in a platform this new.
Invisible in AI conversations already happening
Customers are already asking ChatGPT for recommendations, and brands with no AI visibility are missing those moments entirely.
Unsure how it compares to platforms that already work
Without a clear read on cost, targeting or return, it’s difficult to justify testing ChatGPT ads over channels with a proven track record.
No measurement foundations in place
Even if you wanted to test ChatGPT ads, without the right tracking and content foundations in place, it’s hard to know what’s actually working.
Every SEO decision deserves an expert opinion
Understand your AI advertising readiness
ChatGPT ads are still new, but the fundamentals that determine success here- content clarity, entity authority and trustworthy signals, are ones we already understand deeply. Getting the groundwork right now means you won’t be scrambling to catch up once the platform matures. The X-Chart is Shout’s proprietary audit, built around a guaranteed sales forecast for your business over the next 3, 6 and 12 months. It gives you a clear, commercial view of where your brand currently stands in AI-driven conversations, and exactly what it will take to be genuinely prepared as this channel opens up.

I've worked with Michael and his team at Shout Digital on several long term projects over the past 8 years, and I've always been impressed by the professionalism, accountability and frankly honest approach to simplifying digital marketing and providing great, reliable results for our projects time and time again. We have worked on several Magento and Shopify migrations both domestically and global brands and the technical expertise in replatforming ecommerce sites without losing search equity first class. Shout Digital is setting a better standard for the whole industry and I would definitely recommend them to brands starting out all the way to established complex marketing operations.

We've been working with Shout for a little over a year now - moving to external support from an agency was a big transition for us, but one that the Shout team, specifically Matilda & Megan M have supported us with tremendously. Willing and eager to understand our requirements and how to best deliver on that each and every week. We look forward to continuing to work together in the future.

ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements that appear at the bottom of a ChatGPT response, clearly labelled “Sponsored” and visually separated from the AI’s actual answer. Rather than keyword targeting, they use contextual matching based on the topic of the conversation, and OpenAI has been explicit that advertising never influences the content of the AI’s organic response above it.
Yes. ChatGPT ads launched in Australia on 17 April 2026, making it one of the first international markets to receive the rollout outside the US, alongside New Zealand and Canada. OpenAI cited Australian usage more than doubling in the 12 months prior as a key reason for the early inclusion.
Instead of keyword bidding, advertisers provide “context hints” describing the scenarios where their ad is relevant, and OpenAI’s systems match those hints to the topic of an active conversation. Targeting is currently limited to country-level geography, with demographic targeting, audience syncing and lookalike audiences expected later in 2026.
As of mid-2026, ChatGPT ads use both CPM and CPC bidding, with CPC typically ranging from $3 to $5 per click and no minimum spend requirement. This is a significant drop from the platform’s initial launch, which required a $200,000–$250,000 minimum spend commitment at a $60 CPM.
Google Ads targets explicit, declared intent through keywords, while ChatGPT ads target the semantic context of an entire conversation, a richer but currently less controllable signal. Google Search’s average click-through rate sits around 6.4%, compared to ChatGPT’s current 0.91%, reflecting how much earlier this platform is in its maturity.
Ads only appear for users on the ChatGPT Free tier and the $8/month Go plan. Users on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans don’t see ads at all, which means the ad-eligible audience skews toward casual, early-stage researchers rather than professional or power users.
It depends on your goals. Brands with awareness-focused KPIs and a test budget of around $50,000 have a genuine early-mover opportunity, particularly in retail and consumer categories. Businesses relying on strong, provable attribution, such as B2B lead generation or performance-focused ecommerce, are generally better placed to wait for OpenAI’s measurement and CRM integration tools to mature.
Current reporting is limited to aggregated impressions and clicks, with no pixel-based attribution, demographic breakdown or view-through conversion data available yet. Multi-touch attribution and CRM integrations with platforms like Salesforce and HubSpot are on OpenAI’s roadmap but aren’t live yet.
Ads appear as a lightly tinted, clearly labelled “Sponsored” box at the bottom of a ChatGPT response, and can include sponsored product cards on product-related queries, similar in style to Google Shopping. The organic AI answer above the ad remains unaffected by any paid placement.
The most valuable groundwork isn’t paid at all; it’s building organic AI visibility through Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO), the practice of structuring content and entity signals so AI platforms cite your brand directly inside their answers. This compounds over time and works alongside paid ChatGPT ads rather than replacing them.
We treat ChatGPT ads as one part of a bigger picture, not an isolated tactic. Our senior team already tracks and optimises brand visibility across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, which means we understand both the paid and organic sides of AI-driven discovery, not just how to launch a campaign.
Yes. We can set up and manage campaigns through OpenAI’s Ads Manager, from context hints and creative through to budget and performance tracking, while being upfront about what current reporting can and can’t tell you at this stage of the platform’s maturity.
For most Australian businesses, we’d recommend prioritising organic AI visibility first, since it’s what earns your brand a genuine, unpaid citation inside an AI’s answer, not just a sponsored box beneath it. That said, the two work well together, and we can help you build both in parallel if your goals and budget support it.
We work across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, since each platform has its own approach to advertising and organic visibility. Claude, by comparison, doesn’t currently offer advertising at all, having positioned itself as ad-free.
Yes. Staying ahead of how search and advertising evolve has been core to how we operate for 15 years, including being early to test and understand new platforms before they become mainstream, rather than waiting until the opportunity is obvious to everyone else.
Yes. Depending on your goals, budget and how important provable attribution is to your business, ChatGPT ads may not be the right fit yet, particularly if you rely heavily on cost-per-acquisition or ROAS reporting. We’d rather give you an honest recommendation than push a channel that isn’t ready for what you need.
Yes, and this is generally the smarter approach right now. ChatGPT ads currently work best as a reach and upper-funnel complement, not a replacement for a well-optimised Google Ads account, which remains the more measurable, higher-intent channel for most businesses today.
Beyond ChatGPT ads, we offer GEO and AEO services for ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude, helping your brand earn genuine, unpaid citations within AI-generated answers, alongside our broader SEO,paid search, and paid social services.
