A solid ecommerce design is an essential component to improve the results on your ecommerce site. Otherwise, it will make it harder to users to find the goods they need on your site.

Having the right ecommerce design requires a few basic elements that we discuss below. Without them, your site might not have the dynamics needed to convert on your traffic.

1. Premium templates/Custom Design

It is time to ditch the generic template that you found for $9 on Template Monster. The reality is most templates, while they are moderately functional, do not have the aesthetic and comprehensive functionality that an ecommerce site needs.

Premium templates like WooCommerce or Shopify conversely have the features a company needs to expand their ecommerce site as they grow. It is easier also to improve the quality of an ecommerce design when you have the right tools. Cheap themes make this difficult to use.

2. Live chat and/or easy contact options

Every ecommerce site would be incomplete without having a way for customers to contact the store with any questions they have about your products and services.

Live chat is a popular option for those who want to provide quick, around the clock support. You never know when someone surfing your site is one question away from purchasing.

However, if you are not able to provide a live chat, then at least have an easy contact form or phone number for customers. It is important that you respond as quickly as possible to this contact information, in order to help customers while they are interested.

3. Short and Sweet Website Copy

Some websites just don’t know how to stop speaking. You go to a product page and the copy stretches down for what seems like forever.

It is good to keep your customers informed of your products. However, you should keep the information on products short and sweet. Website users have a short attention span.

Therefore, when possible keep product pages to 500 words or less. Focus on the most relevant and important information first.

Use a bullet list of the products’ features and benefits makes it very easy for your customers. By making it visually easy to scan, you can increase the conversion rate. Conversely, people who see too much information might get scared and just bounce off the site.

4. Real-time inventory

One of the most annoying things about modern eCommerce is how a website prominently markets a product, only to disappoint you when you go to the shopping cart to purchase.

Make sure that your ecommerce site has real-time inventory controls, so you do not push out of stock items to customers. By having the inventory, it cleans up the ecommerce design of any unnecessary products.

That is why Amazon displays product availability prominently in their search results. They know that the worst thing they can do is drive customers to a product they cannot ship.

5. Mobile Optimized Site

Did you know that 30% of all ecommerce sales now happen through mobile devices? Pair that with the changes in mobile search requirements from Google, and you can see how vitally important it is to have a mobile optimized website.

Fortunately, with modern CMS platforms it is easier to create a responsive website today than it has been in the past. Most platforms like WordPress, Wix, Joomla, and others already have responsive design elements built into the platform.

However, if your site does not have mobile capabilities it is at a severe disadvantage.
